Translating Tips

How do we verify the translation is correct?

Example

What is the Chinese equivalent of Sport Biomechanist?

A translator proudly gave me this version:   体育物理科学家

To this translator, Sport = 体育;Biomechanist = 物理科学家

My advice to fellow translators is, verify this by one easy way – google “体育物理科学家”. If the search result does not churn out a single match that is 100%, it means that this term does not exist in the Chinese language.

I wondered how the translator came up with 物理科学家 for Biomechanist. I would have understood if it was Physicist.

Biomechanist is a combination of biology and mechanist. Clearly the Chinese equivalent should have 生物 in it.

It is more appropriate to translate Sport Biomechanist as 运动生物力学家.

Write to me, if you wish to know how i got this answer.
